11th Senate Leadership: Akpabio Courts Tinubu, Appeals Against Uzodimma’s Rival Bid

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has publicly called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to endorse his re-election bid as leader of the 11th Senate in 2027, while appealing to the President to discourage Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma from contesting the upper legislative chamber’s top seat.

Speaking on Wednesday during a high-profile political gathering at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Akpabio urged President Tinubu to back returning principal officers and lawmakers seeking re-election to preserve legislative stability and continuity.

Directing his appeal to the President, Akpabio pledged the unwavering loyalty of the National Assembly leadership, declaring that the legislature remains a solid foundation of support for the administration.

“Nobody can break through the National Assembly to dislodge you; we are solidly behind you,” Akpabio stated, while requesting presidential backing for current National Assembly leaders in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Highlighting growing political rivalry within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 11th National Assembly, Akpabio raised concerns over Governor Uzodimma’s reported bid for the Senate Presidency.

Uzodimma, whose second gubernatorial term concludes in early 2028, recently confirmed his intention to run for the Imo West senatorial seat in 2027.

Cautioning against leadership clashes, Akpabio argued that outgoing governors should focus on completing their executive mandates effectively rather than disturbing established legislative arrangements.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Uzodimma affirmed his senatorial ambition but emphasized party unity, noting that the collective goal remains delivering victory for President Tinubu and all APC candidates across board.

The developing contest highlights early strategic maneuvering within the APC as key political figures position themselves for leadership roles in the 11th National Assembly ahead of the 2027 polls.
