Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Thursday officially commissioned a fleet of 50 newly acquired Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses procured by the Edo State Government to cushion the rising cost of public transportation for residents across Benin City.
The high-profile ceremony, held in the state capital, was jointly hosted and received by the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, alongside the Governor of Kogi State, who was present on the ground to welcome the First Lady alongside top government functionaries, traditional leaders, and women groups.
Delivering his address, Governor Monday Okpebholo expressed profound gratitude to Senator Oluremi Tinubu for making time out of her demanding schedule to perform the official commissioning.
Governor Okpebholo stated that the acquisition of the 50 CNG-powered buses by the state government is a direct policy response to ease the financial burden of transportation on civil servants, students, market women, and everyday commuters in the state.
Delivering her address, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu commended the Edo State Government for taking proactive steps toward sustainable transit and economic relief.
Recalling the shared historical heritage of the region, the First Lady reflected on the historical ties of the former Bendel State, noting how the people of present-day Edo and Delta states lived together as one family prior to state creation.
Speaking from her personal roots as a Delta woman, she underscored the enduring brotherhood, unity, and cultural bond between the two states, expressing joy at returning home to Benin City.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu further highlighted that the introduction of CNG buses aligns seamlessly with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which continues to advocate for the nationwide adoption of Compressed Natural Gas as a cleaner, cheaper, and eco-friendly alternative to conventional fuel.
The commissioning exercise concluded with the formal unveiling and test drive of the 50 CNG buses, which are set to be deployed immediately across urban transit corridors in Benin City to deliver low-cost mobility for residents.
