The Federal Government has formally approved a N70,000 monthly transport allowance for public service workers across all grade levels to mitigate the prevailing high cost of living. The financial relief package will run for an initial period of six months, taking effect from November 2026.
The decision was sealed in Abuja during a conciliation meeting convened by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment alongside leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress.
Chaired by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, with the labour delegation led by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the session addressed various pending worker welfare demands, national minimum wage frameworks, and unpaid allowances.
Beyond the temporary transport subsidy, the administration agreed to settle outstanding peculiar allowance arrears dating back to May 1, 2026. Payments for the accrued peculiar allowances will commence alongside the new transport grant in November, spread across three equal monthly installments to ease civil service financial constraints.
Both government officials and trade union delegates agreed to reconvene in four weeks to review the progress of implementation across federal agencies.
The joint committee also urged state governments and local council authorities to replicate similar financial relief measures for public workers in their respective jurisdictions.
