MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Two Nigerian Army personnel have been killed and 13 others injured following an weaponized drone attack launched by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a military outpost in Borno State.
Security sources confirmed that the insurgents targeted a military position in Kukawa Local Government Area at approximately 6:14 p.m. on Saturday.
The assault reportedly occurred shortly after a delegation from the Borno State Government—which included the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar—concluded an official visit to the area.
According to preliminary intelligence reports, the insurgents deployed armed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to drop explosives directly onto the military base, catching troops off guard before launching follow-up fire.
Emergency medical teams evacuated the wounded soldiers to a military medical center for treatment, while troops have mounted high-level search-and-clearance operations across the Kukawa axis to locate the origin of the drone operators.
Neither the Defence Headquarters nor the Borno State Government has issued a formal statement regarding the incident as of press time.
