SOKOTO — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has vowed to press ahead with its political activities and scheduled campaign in Sokoto State, defying the state government’s decision to seal off its main campaign office.
The political standoff intensified after the Sokoto State Government ordered the closure of the party’s campaign facility situated along Ahmadu Bello Way in the Sokoto metropolis. State officials, led by the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Nasiru Dantsoho, stated that the action was taken following a security incident involving political supporters and to verify legal ownership of the premises.
According to the government, property records indicate the building belongs to the defunct Savannah Bank, prompting an official inquiry to the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NgDIC).
Condemning the move, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi accused Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration of abusing state power to intimidate opposition forces and suppress open political competition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Abdullahi warned that the state leadership would be held accountable for any violence or unlawful obstruction directed against opposition members, emphasizing that public office constitutes a temporary trust rather than ownership of the state.
Reaffirming the party’s resolve, Abdullahi stated that the campaign office closure would not derail ADC’s operations in Sokoto State. Calling on security agencies to remain strictly neutral and uphold constitutional rights, he urged party supporters to remain law-abiding while defending their democratic right to organize across all local government areas.
