Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has launched a sharp criticism against former Anambra State Governor and prominent political figure, Peter Obi, questioning his motives for making high-profile visits and hosting birthday celebrations at Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps across the country.
Speaking in Abuja, Wike dismissed such public engagements as calculated political theatricals designed to win cheap public sympathy ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The FCT minister argued that public office seekers must be judged by their concrete governance track records rather than symbolic gestures performed in vulnerable communities.
Wike accused key opposition leaders of engaging in political opportunism and performative humility to deceive voters. He challenged Obi to contrast his eight-year tenure as governor of Anambra State with his current public posturing, asserting that true leadership is demonstrated through systemic developmental achievements rather than public relations activities in relief centres.
Addressing stakeholders and political leaders on the strategic dynamics shaping the political landscape ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle, the FCT minister questioned the sincerity of the visits:
“You cannot become President of Nigeria only when you go to one IDP camp for a birthday party. Doing your birthday in an IDP camp does not mean you love Nigeria or that you are committed to change. When you were governor in Anambra, why didn’t you celebrate birthdays in IDP camps? Now that you want to be president, every birthday is with the less privileged. Who are you trying to deceive?”
The minister further stated that political contenders who struggled to maintain internal cohesion within their own political parties lacked the administrative capacity required to manage a complex nation like Nigeria.
With political alignments and campaign rhetoric intensifying ahead of 2027, Wike’s comments highlight the deepening rivalries across Nigeria’s political space, as key actors contest governance records and leadership credentials.
