Uganda Rejects Infection Origin Claims Following Abuja Ebola Case Confirmation

ABUJA, Nigeria — Ugandan health authorities have officially disputed claims linking a newly confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria’s capital to an active outbreak within their borders, sparking a diplomatic and public health clarification between both nations.

The controversy began on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, when Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, announced that a female patient in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) tested positive for the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. The patient had arrived in Abuja on October 7 after traveling through East Africa, including a transit stop in Uganda, before showing symptoms on October 11 and subsequently being placed in strict medical isolation.

Responding directly in a formal declaration on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Uganda’s Ministry of Health firmly rejected assertions that the infection was contracted on its soil. Officials emphasized that while the traveler transited through Kampala, transit alone does not constitute proof of local transmission.

Ugandan health authorities underscored that the country maintains zero active Ebola cases and was formally declared free of transmission earlier this year, urging international bodies not to misattribute the origin of exposure.

In response to the positive diagnosis, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), alongside the FCT Health Services Secretariat, activated rapid response teams and initiated contact tracing for 44 identified individuals who came into contact with the patient. Hospitals and port-of-entry health screening checkpoints across Nigeria have been directed to elevate suspicion thresholds and enforce rigorous isolation protocols.

Both governments, in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO), are continuing epidemiologic investigations to trace the exact environmental source of the exposure.
