Africa CDC Calls on Ugandan-Born Ebola Patient in Nigeria to Disclose Full Travel History

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has revealed that the individual diagnosed with Ebola in Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, is a Ugandan-born resident married to a diplomat, urging the patient to disclose her full travel history to assist public health authorities in establishing the true source of infection. Speaking on Nigerian television, Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya confirmed that the woman spent several days in Uganda before her husband joined her, with both returning to Abuja in early October. Public health investigators are currently attempting to clarify whether the woman traveled outside Kampala, made contact with individuals exposed to the virus, or transited through neighboring territories such as the Democratic Republic of Congo prior to her return.

The disclosure comes amid growing tension and differing accounts between regional public health bodies and Ugandan health officials regarding the origin of the transmission.

Uganda’s Ministry of Health previously asserted that the patient had traveled to eastern DRC for business before transiting through Uganda, maintaining that the country has no active cases and that mere transit through its borders does not prove local transmission.

In response, the Africa CDC emphasized that transparent cooperation from the patient is critical to establishing definitive exposure links, preventing diplomatic friction across member states, and ensuring robust contact tracing.

Meanwhile, Nigerian health officials confirmed that the patient’s condition deteriorated into multi-organ failure after she began exhibiting symptoms, prompting immediate isolation and intensive medical management.

Authorities in Abuja have identified dozens of close contacts associated with the case and instituted a strictly enforced 21-day no-fly restriction on 46 individuals to prevent further spread. The Africa CDC has cautioned African leaders against regional finger-pointing or politicizing the public health emergency, urging unified cross-border collaboration as health agencies work to track and contain the geographic reach of the Bundibugyo Ebola strain.
