ABUJA, Nigeria — Nationwide flooding has claimed 245 lives and displaced 214,997 individuals across 28 states, the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, announced.
The disaster situational report was presented during the National Emergency Coordination Forum (NECF) meeting in Abuja by NEMA representative Dr. Godwin Topikor, on behalf of the agency’s Director-General.
Official data compiled by emergency monitoring teams shows that 673,350 individuals have been severely affected across 134 local government areas, with extensive damage recorded on agricultural land, homes, and public facilities.
NEMA attributed the severe inundation to heavy seasonal rainfalls, coupled with the overflow of major river basins including the Niger and Benue rivers.
The agency confirmed that emergency relief intervention kits, food items, and medical supplies are being distributed to displaced persons camps in collaboration with state emergency management agencies (SEMAs).
”As of our latest assessment on October 20, flooding has affected 673,350 people across 134 local government areas in 28 states, displacing 214,997 and tragically claiming 245 lives,” Dr. Topikor delivered on behalf of the NEMA boss.
