AWKA, NIGERIA — Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has put to rest recent public debate surrounding his family’s personal relationship with former governor Peter Obi, confirming that Obi’s wife, Margaret, is indeed the baptismal godmother to one of his children.
Speaking during an interview with BBC News Igbo, Governor Soludo clarified that the close relationship extends both ways, noting that his wife, Nonye Soludo, also serves as the confirmation godmother to Peter Obi’s daughter.
The clarification comes following weeks of public discussion after comments made regarding Catholic godparenting traditions and family ties between the two prominent political figures.
Addressing the political friction often highlighted in the media, Soludo emphasized that their personal bond remains intact despite holding differing political visions for the governance of Anambra State.
“Peter Obi and I are good friends. Our two families are on good terms. His wife was the godmother of my child at baptism, and my wife was the godmother of his child at confirmation,” Soludo said during the interview.
He added that political contestations should not be mistaken for personal animosity, stating that he holds no grudges over their political differences.
“I have a different vision of who should be governor of Anambra State. I am contesting, and he supported whoever he felt should be governor. I prevailed by the grace of God, and I don’t hold it against him,” the Governor added.
The revelation underscores a long-standing family friendship between the two political leaders that predates their current political engagements in the state and across Nigeria.
