OWERRI, NIGERIA — The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) has fixed Saturday, November 14, 2026, as the new date for the local government council elections across the 27 local government areas of the state.
The announcement was made by the commission’s chairman, Charles Ejiogu, during a press briefing held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at the ISIEC headquarters in Owerri.
The electoral umpire explained that the adjustment in the election timetable became necessary to allow political parties adequate time to conduct peaceful primaries, complete candidate submissions, and address security and logistical arrangements across all voting centers.
The polls—initially slated for September 26 and later moved to November 7—were temporarily put on hold over the weekend following comprehensive consultations with leadership from participating political parties, civil society organizations, and security agencies.
Reassuring political parties and aspirants, Ejiogu affirmed that the commission remains committed to providing a level playing ground for all chairmanship and councillorship candidates to ensure a transparent, peaceful, and credible exercise.
Under the revised schedule, campaigns across the 27 local council areas will continue until midnight on Thursday, November 12, 2026, ahead of accreditation and voting on election day.
