ABUJA — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Friday evening, October 16, 2026, cleared the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp clinic in Awgu, Enugu State, ruling out substandard or falsified medicines as the cause of a corps member’s death.
The deceased, Daniel, a former Students’ Union Government President of Akwa Ibom State University, died following medical complications at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, triggering viral public allegations that fake drugs administered at the orientation camp clinic caused his death.
In an official statement released in Abuja, NAFDAC revealed that preliminary clinical evaluations indicated the corps member was admitted on Wednesday, October 7, at 9:00 PM presenting symptoms of severe malaria and pre-existing peptic ulcer disease.
The agency explained that camp medical personnel stabilized the patient before he was discharged on October 8, but he returned on Saturday, October 10, experiencing profuse sweating, low blood pressure, and low urine output, which led to an immediate ambulance referral to UNTH.
“The medical doctors, pharmacists, and healthcare workers at the camp clinic not only prescribed but also used the exact same medications themselves at different times,” NAFDAC stated, adding that other corps members treated with the batch recovered fully. “Attending clinical doctors indicated the cause of death was acute kidney injury secondary to severe dehydration and shock.”
NAFDAC confirmed that its inspectors interviewed camp personnel and retrieved drug samples for laboratory analysis, urging the public to remain calm.
