Sultanate Council Moves to Establish Caliphate Islamic Microfinance Bank to Combat Poverty and Boost Employment

SOKOTO, NIGERIA — The Sultanate Council has finalized strategies to establish the Caliphate Islamic Microfinance Bank, an ethical financial institution designed to tackle widespread poverty, generate job opportunities, and drive sustainable socio-economic growth across the region.

The economic initiative was detailed during a specialized capacity-building engagement focused on non-interest microfinance principles and social protection integration. Organizers highlighted that establishing an ethical microfinance structure directly links social welfare mechanisms with active financial empowerment, allowing vulnerable households to transition from dependence to economic self-sufficiency.

Speaking at the workshop, Indonesian Islamic economics and finance expert Saat Suharto emphasized that the model utilizes Baytul Maal wat Tamwil (BMT) principles. This framework combines social welfare tools, such as Zakat (obligatory alms) and Waqf (charitable endowments), with non-interest micro-loans to support low-income entrepreneurs, small businesses, and underemployed youth.

”The ultimate goal of this program is to strengthen local stakeholders’ operational capacity so they can manage financial resources transparently and accountably,” Suharto stated. “By providing vulnerable individuals with structured micro-capital and sustainable livelihood opportunities, we enable them over time to become self-reliant contributors to the economic ecosystem”.

The Sultanate Council confirmed that the establishment process involves administrative overhauls to modernize Zakat and Waqf management, simplify loan distribution protocols, and deploy technology-driven solutions to maintain operational efficiency and public trust. The upcoming Caliphate Islamic Microfinance Bank will prioritize grassroots enterprise development, agricultural support, and local commercial expansion across Sokoto State and surrounding communities.
