The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has pledged enhanced security measures, advanced technological surveillance, and strict operational neutrality across all polling centers during the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Tuesday during a high-level strategic election security briefing at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the police chief assured Nigerians and international observers that comprehensive security frameworks are being actively deployed to safeguard voters, electoral officers, and election infrastructure nationwide.
Disu emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force is leveraging data-driven tactical strategies and modern surveillance technologies—including real-time monitoring devices and strategic intelligence gathering—to identify potential violence hotspots and preempt political thugs, ballot-box snatchers, and trouble-makers before, during, and after the polls.
Highlighting lessons drawn from recent off-cycle elections, the IGP noted that the police force has adopted an academic approach to security management, utilizing crime-prevention models to neutralize potential threats and eliminate gaps in security coverage across the nation’s 176,846 polling units. The police boss also issued a stern warning to political actors and their supporters against acts of violence, intimidation, or hate speech, reiterating that officers deployed for election duties will maintain zero tolerance for lawlessness and act in strict accordance with the Electoral Act and standard policing codes of conduct.
With 2027 election preparations gaining momentum, stakeholders across the country—particularly in the South-South region—have welcomed the force’s early commitment to robust surveillance, expressing hope that tighter security will boost voter confidence and guarantee peaceful, transparent elections.
