Nigerian Government Resumes Mass Terrorism Trials as Courts Sentence 21 Suspects in Abuja, Kebbi

The Federal Government of Nigeria has resumed mass judicial proceedings against terrorism suspects across designated judicial divisions, resulting in the conviction and sentencing of 21 individuals in Abuja and Kebbi State.

The coordinated judicial exercise, overseen by the National Counter Terrorism Centre under the Office of the National Security Adviser, aims to clear long-pending terrorism dockets while enforcing strict legal accountability for national security infractions.

The prosecution team, led by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), presented various cases before multiple Federal High Court judges. Simultaneously, suspects were provided free legal defense by representatives from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria to ensure compliance with constitutional fair-hearing safeguards.

Among those convicted during the opening sessions were two Boko Haram operatives sentenced to life imprisonment alongside additional 20-year prison terms for providing material support and logistical assistance to proscribed insurgent groups. In separate courtrooms, nineteen other defendants received varying custodial sentences after being found guilty of treasonable felony, weapons stockpiling, and aiding violent extremism across northern operational theatres.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), confirmed that judicial officers are presiding over hundreds of cases under heightened security arrangements managed jointly by the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Correctional Service.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria remains firmly committed to upholding the rule of law while prosecuting all individuals linked to violent extremism and threats against sovereign security. These trials demonstrate our determination to bring perpetrators to justice through transparent judicial processes,” the Ministry of Justice stated.

Security experts and human rights observers across the country have monitored the proceedings, emphasizing that swift adjudication of insurgency cases remains crucial for national stability, deterrence, and restoring public trust in the administration of justice.
