Fatal Extraction Operation in Abule-Egba Leaves Local Samaritan Dead and Missing Child Unrecovered

LAGOS, Nigeria — A quiet residential neighbourhood in the Abule-Egba corridor of Lagos was plunged into mourning when a desperate attempt to rescue a two-year-old child who fell into an open domestic well ended in double tragedy.

The incident occurred along Paul Street, near Agbe Road, on Tuesday evening, October 20, 2026. A two-year-old toddler accidentally slipped through an unsealed well opening into deep water. Seeing the child in immediate danger, a brave bystander plunged into the shaft without safety equipment in a desperate bid to pull the toddler to safety.

Instead of a rescue, the situation rapidly turned fatal. The volunteer succumbed to suffocation and drowning beneath the water level.

A joint task force—comprising the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and local police personnel—arrived at the scene following emergency distress calls.

Emergency crews faced severe operational hurdles due to extreme shaft depth, high water volume, and dense mud accumulation at the base. Specialized local divers deployed deep into the well managed to recover the body of the adult rescuer. His remains were formally handed over to his family for burial after on-site medical certification.

Despite extensive suction pumping and manual clearance operations, responders were unable to reach the child. A specialist diver confirmed that the toddler had been pulled into deep subterranean sediment at the floor of the well, with only a small shoe retrieved from the mud.

Discussions between emergency managers, municipal officials, community leaders, and the victim’s immediate family led to the official suspension and closure of recovery efforts on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.

Speaking on the disaster, LASEMA Permanent Secretary Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu praised the deceased rescuer’s sacrifice while issuing an urgent safety directive to property owners across the metropolis. He urged residents to immediately cap, raise, and securely lock all exposed domestic wells, warning against untrained civilians attempting hazardous confined-space rescues.
