Nelfund Launches Token System To Prevent Double Tuition Payments

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has initiated a pilot program introducing a tokenised payment framework aimed at curbing duplicate tuition payments by beneficiaries and eliminating complex refund procedures. Managing Director of the fund, Akintunde Sawyerr, made this disclosure on Wednesday during a press interaction, detailing that the agency has already processed nearly 400,000 applications under its current scheme. The newly introduced mechanism gives students direct operational control by enabling them to initiate payments to their respective tertiary institutions via school-linked tokens generated through a dedicated mobile application.

Under the previous operational model, communication gaps frequently led to situations where students independently settled their institutional fees before realizing that the fund had already disbursed the money directly to their schools. This breakdown in notification timing created unintended financial overlaps, forcing affected students into lengthy reimbursement processes. Sawyerr cited scenarios where institutional accounts were credited early in the week, but students, striving to meet strict institutional clearance deadlines, paid out of pocket days later. He emphasized that these occurrences were honest administrative errors rather than deliberate attempts at fraud.

To permanently address these operational bottlenecks, the tokenised framework ensures that approved funds remain secured within a restricted system rather than being disbursed into personal bank accounts. Once an application receives approval, the beneficiary receives an automated notification and can immediately authorize the transfer directly from their mobile device into the designated institution’s account. The fund management emphasized that while the new arrangement empowers students with direct transactional control, strict security parameters prevent the tokens from being diverted to personal accounts or transferred to unauthorized external entities.

The leadership of the fund provided further clarification regarding the operational boundaries of the system, assuring that funds remain strictly locked to designated educational institutions. Under the platform’s setup, an approved tuition allocation, such as a specific two hundred thousand naira disbursement, can only be transferred into the official account of the beneficiary’s registered school once the student manually authorises the transaction. If a beneficiary does not trigger the payment prompt, the funds remain completely motionless and cannot be diverted into any personal bank account or third-party channel.

Expanding on the technical architecture of the platform, the fund’s Executive Director, Mustapha Iyal, clarified that the tokenised mechanism operates independently of standard personal or mobile money digital wallets. Each generated token is permanently anchored to the specific institution tied to the student’s verified profile, ensuring that funds can only flow directly toward covering legitimate institutional charges. Management confirmed that the pilot implementation is already active and currently processing nearly four hundred thousand loan applications under this secured framework.
