BENIN CITY, NIGERIA — Officials of the Edo State Consumer Protection Committee impounded batches of banned beverages and uncovered expired inventory during an unannounced enforcement sweep at Ford Mart along Sapele Road in Benin City.
The operation, led by Committee Chairman Mr. Iyamu Osaro Culture, formed part of ongoing state-wide enforcement measures aimed at removing unsafe consumer products from public markets.
While preliminary checks on retail shelves confirmed that the majority of displayed merchandise met safety standards, taskforce officers spotted a specific beverage brand previously confiscated during an earlier raid along Mission Road. The discovery prompted immediate orders for the items to be removed and seized on the spot.
Subsequent inspections extended to the supermarket’s storage warehouse, where enforcement officers discovered stockpiles of expired consumables.
Acknowledging the store management’s full compliance during the raid, the taskforce issued a strict seven-day mandate requiring the supervised destruction of the compromised warehouse stock and a thorough sanitation of the entire retail facility.
Speaking during the enforcement exercise, Chairman Iyamu Osaro Culture emphasized that store operations must strictly align with consumer safety standards.
“We detected that the majority of the products are safe for consumption, while a particular brand of drinks that we earlier seized at Mission Road was found on the shelves of Ford Mart, thereby prompting the Chairman to order its seizure,” the committee noted in an official release.
The leadership reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining rigorous market monitoring across Edo State to safeguard public health in alignment with the administrative priorities of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
“We must continue to safeguard the health and rights of consumers in line with the SHINE Agenda of His Excellency, distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo, the Executive Governor of Edo State. Inspection and monitoring continues,” Culture declared.
