In a major move to fortify regional security and safeguard critical infrastructure, Delta State is preparing to host a newly established Air Defense Regiment under the Nigerian Army’s 83 Division. The deployment will see an initial contingent of approximately 300 to 400 soldiers stationed in the state over the coming weeks.
The announcement followed an inspection tour conducted on Thursday by Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, alongside top military officials, including Major General Thompson Ugiagbe, Chief of Standards and Evaluation for the Nigerian Army, and Brigadier General Ibrahim Buhari, Commander of the 63 Brigade.
Strategic Importance and Coverage
The recently created 83 Division was structured to oversee security operations across Delta, Edo, and Bayelsa states. By realigning military formations, the Army aims to enhance operational efficiency, reduce response times during emergencies, and offer comprehensive defense for economic assets throughout the Niger Delta region.
According to state officials, Delta was selected to host the Specialized Air Defense Regiment due to its strategic geographic position and proximity to major aviation infrastructure.
Infrastructure and Support
To facilitate a smooth setup, the Delta State Government has allocated land for an immediate temporary site while arrangements progress toward constructing a permanent facility.
Key highlights of the initiative include:
- Troop Deployment: An initial deployment batch of 300 to 400 specialized personnel arriving shortly.
- Asset Protection: Heightened defense capabilities around essential civil, industrial, and transportation hubs.
- Inter-Agency Collaboration: Enhanced operational synergy among the military, regional security organs, and local communities.
Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed the state’s readiness to assist security agencies, noting that solid military presence is vital for fostering economic development and maintaining peace across the state.
