Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has ordered the state Ministry of Health to institute mandatory free quarterly medical examinations for citizens across all eight local government areas.
Governor Diri announced the initiative on Sunday while speaking at a special thanksgiving service held at St. John’s Anglican Church in Olobiri, Kaiama, located within the Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area.
He emphasized that regular health screenings are critical for early detection and prevention, specifically targeting life-threatening conditions such as hypertension and cancer, which often go unnoticed until advanced stages.
Under the newly issued directive, health authorities are expected to structure accessible screening sessions that will run every three months across communities in the state.
The move is designed to shift public health efforts toward routine preventative care, reduce avoidable medical emergencies, and alleviate the financial strain of treatment on families and state medical infrastructure.
The Ministry of Health is set to release implementation frameworks and designated centers to guide residents on participation ahead of the initial rollout.
