The Federal Ministry of Education has called on labor unions across Nigeria’s tertiary education sector to prioritize continuous dialogue over industrial actions. The government emphasized that constructive negotiation remains the most effective pathway to resolving long-standing labor disputes without disrupting the academic calendar
The appeal follows the public unveiling of updated agreements between the federal government and staff unions representing universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Officials stressed that maintaining industrial peace is critical to safeguarding the quality of higher education and preserving student progression nationwide.
Addressing union representatives, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Ojo reassured labor executives of the administration’s commitment to fulfilling contractual agreements and addressing concerns regarding worker welfare, conditions of service, and institutional funding. Authorities urged union leaders to demonstrate mutual good faith at negotiation tables to build a resilient and stable academic environment.
In response, tertiary education unions acknowledged the newly presented agreements while emphasizing that seamless, timely implementation by government agencies will be the key test for maintaining lasting harmony across campuses nationwide.
