ABA, ABIA STATE — Tragedy struck in Abia State on Saturday as unidentified gunmen launched a midnight explosive attack on the Uratta-Eziukwu Divisional Police Headquarters in Aba, leaving two senior police officers dead and three inspectors severely injured.
According to official reports from the Abia State Police Command, the heavily armed assailants struck the facility at precisely 2:26 a.m., deploying improvised explosive devices that triggered a fierce fire. The resulting blaze heavily damaged parts of the station building and completely gutted a divisional patrol vehicle.
Confirming the incident in an official statement, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Maureen Chinaka, disclosed that three other police inspectors sustained varying degrees of injuries during the onslaught and are currently receiving medical attention.
However, the police command clarified that despite the intensity of the raid, the attackers failed to break into the armory, as no firearms or ammunition were carted away.
Following the breach, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, personally led an operational team and tactical units to the scene to assess the damage and comb the surrounding neighborhood.
Assuring residents of their safety, the police commissioner strongly condemned the attack, vowing that the command will deploy its full intelligence and operational assets to hunt down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Security has since been tightened across the commercial hub as investigations into the motive and identity of the gunmen continue.
